Our nurseries

The breeding stations of SaKa are located in Windeby, Schleswig-Holstein and Gransebieth, Ranzin and Stolpe in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Windeby offers ideal conditions as a potato breeding location. It is benefited by the winds coming from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The light and stony soil offers tough conditions for the selection of robust and unpretentious varieties. Thus, we can guarantee that our varieties are very well adapted to various climatic and soil conditions.

Gransebieth, Ranzin and Stolpe are climatically privileged sites located near to the Baltic Sea with a long potato growing tradition. With a team of skilled and experienced potato specialists these are important locations for our breeding activities. The farm in Gransebieth produces potatoes under conventional agricultural conditions. Thus we receive valuable experience that can be efficiently used in our breeding work.

Breeding station Windeby

Nursery-area: 

• 40 - 45 hectares (3 sites plus 0,5 hectare late blight resistance trial)
• Pre-basic seed potatoes: 60 hectares

Rainfall: 

• 800 mm (long term average)
• Rainfall April - September: 424 mm (long term average)

Nurseries:

• Breeding: 19 hectares
• clonal maintenance: 9 hectares
• rapid propagation (M1): 15 hectares

Breeding station Ranzin

Rainfall:

• 600 mm (long term average)
• Rainfall April - September: 352 mm (long term average)

Nurseries:

• New variety breeding: 2 ha
• Fast multiplication: 6 ha
• Pre-basic seed potatoes: 170 ha
